A few short months ago, Honda's CEO, Takahiro Hachigo, announced that by the year 2030, two-thirds of new sales would be in electrified vehicles. "At the core of electrification in the future," he said, would be the plug-in hybrid.

Plug-in hybrids differ from conventional hybrids, and from battery-electric vehicles. A plug-in hybrid charges from an electrical outlet or charging station, and can run on electricity alone. It can make journeys longer than its electric range by engaging a gas engine to work in support of the electric motor.

In other words, it is both very efficient, and very flexible.

A trio of models sharing a platform will offer customers unparalleled choice between three electric powertrain options. These are the Honda Clarity Fuel Cell, the Clarity Electric, and the Clarity Plug-in Hybrid.

The Clarity Fuel Cell will generate electricity using a hydrogen fuel cell stack, while the Clarity Electric will use a rechargeable battery. The Clarity Plug-in Hybrid is expected to be the volume-leader of the trio. All three will be available by the end of 2017, kicking off Honda's march toward the two-thirds goal.
