FWD vs. AWD Comparison

Are AWD cars necessary in Boise?

  • Does AWD Provide Better Traction?: It's true, AWD and 4x4 vehicles provided better traction during the record breaking Treasure Valley Snowpocolype of 2017. But that record braking winter is turning out to be a once-in-a-lifetime winter. AWD is simply unnecessary during our average Boise winter weather conditions.
  • FWD Modern Technology: All of the modern technology going into new Honda front-wheel drive cars will provide you with a similar peace of mind that an AWD SUV will. Honda sedans offer Active Stability Assist (VSR) with Traction Control that will assist in stabilizing and maintaining traction on loose or slippery roads. Your new Honda will keep you on the road, even in difficult road conditions.
  • How much is really about the tires?: No AWD system will maintain traction well in slick conditions when driving on bald tires, the same with any 2-wheel drive vehicle. As long as your FWD Honda sedan has a good set of All-Weather tires, the typical Boise snowstorm will not get in your way.

AWD Vehicles Cost More

  • Buying: AWD vehicles are initially more expensive with a higher purchase price than their 2WD counterparts.
  • Owning: AWD vehicles can be more expensive to maintain due to their higher complexity when compared to 2WD vehicles.
  • ReSale Value: AWD vehicles do generally have a higher resale value,  so we will be able to give you more for your trade when you trade-in your expensive AWD for a new Honda sedan!

AWD vs. FWD Gas Milage

  • AWD systems use more energy due to their need to supply power to all 4 wheels. Plus they are heavier, which also dampers fuel economy.  The Environmental Protection Agency estimates AWD cars lose one to two miles per gallon over their 2WD counterparts.
