The eyes of tuners and performance enthusiasts turned to Las Vegas this past week for the annual SEMA show, an event that usually brings no shortage of great prototypes and one-off concepts to the fore. Among the prototypes was something special: the Honda Civic Type R Concept, which made its American debut for the first time.
The Type R wasn’t the only iteration of the Civic to bow at the show (in fact, the Japanese automaker had an entire booth based on the nameplate, called “Civicpalooza”), but it’s the only one confirmed for production. Taking the recently-available Civic hatchback, and adding on unique styling such as a rear wing spoiler, triple centerline exhaust, and a unique red interior, the prototype showcases an impressive direction for the future production Type R.
Whispers of an American Civic Type R date back years, but only became tangible after the most recent iteration was made available in Europe. With north of 300 horsepower, it was quite the enticing proposition for U.S. fans. While reports of the power numbers of the upcoming Civic Type R are unconfirmed, some suggest 300+ horsepower isn’t too far off the mark. Yay!
